HYDREMA'S EVOLUTION: WORLD-CLASS CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT SINCE 1959

In Aalborg, in 1959, a vision for innovative construction equipment was born. Hydrema, an amalgamation of 'Hydrauliske Entreprenør Maskiner' (Hydraulic Construction Machines), was founded by local engineer, Kjeld Werner Jensen. What began in a modest workshop has now blossomed into a global player in the construction equipment industry, known for its high-quality, mid-sized machines.

The Hydremas journey is a testament to the power of innovation and resilience. From the pioneering machine "The Phantom," our first machine that revolutionised hydraulic machinery, to the state-of-the-art equipment we produce today, our history is rich with milestones. Each step in our development reflects a deep commitment to quality, versatility and meeting the unique demands of the earthmoving industry.

In the 1960s, the expansion to Støvring marked our first step towards growth and laid the foundation for a number of groundbreaking developments. The introduction of the iconic 800 series in the 1980s, a fusion of a wheel loader and an excavator, set new standards in the industry. This was just the beginning of our journey to redefine the earthmoving landscape.

As we expanded globally and established subsidiaries in key markets, Hydrema simultaneously solidified its reputation as a brand synonymous with reliability and innovation. Our entry into the defence sector in the late 1980s, culminating in the production of specialised demining vehicles, further confirmed our adaptability and engineering expertise.

Guided by the visionary leadership of Jan Werner Jensen, Hydrema has not only upheld its heritage, but also embraced new challenges and opportunities. Today, as we continue to innovate and expand, our commitment to providing exceptional earthmoving solutions remains unwavering. Hydrema's story isn't just about machines; it's about the people, passion and perseverance that drive us forward.

Join us on our journey through the decades as we recall our triumphs and innovations that have shaped the world of earthmoving equipment.

THE CREATION (1959)

Foundation and vision: Hydrema was born out of a vision to revolutionise the earthmoving industry. Founded in 1959 by Kjeld Werner Jensen, an engineer with a deep understanding of hydraulics, the company set out to create machines that combined functionality with innovation. The first creation, "The Phantom," was more than just a machine; it was the embodiment of a dream to make a mark in the earthmoving sector.

Early challenges and triumphs: The journey was not without challenges. In the small workshop in Aalborg, resources were limited, but determination and ingenuity were abundant. Jensen's approach to design and manufacturing was guided by a principle of delivering high-quality hydraulic machinery at reasonable prices. This philosophy resonated with customers and laid the foundation for Hydremas future success.

PIONEERING INNOVATIONS (1970S - 1980S)

Establishing an International Footprint: The establishment of subsidiaries in Sweden and Norway in the 1970s was a strategic move that clearly demonstrated Hydroma's intention to become a global player. These subsidiaries were not just sales centres; they were innovation and customer service hubs that expanded Hydroma's reach and reputation.

The 800 Series Revolution: The 1980s was a transformative era for Hydrema with the launch of the 800 Series. This series was the culmination of years of research and development and brought together the best features of a wheel loader and a traditional backhoe loader. It was a bold statement in the earthmoving industry and set new standards for efficiency and versatility.

STRATEGIC EXPANSION (1990S)

In 1996, Hydrema took a significant step forward with the acquisition of Weimar Werk Baumaschinen, a strategic move that profoundly reshaped our business landscape. This was not just an expansion of our workforce and product range; it was a decisive step towards adapting to the specific needs of the European construction market. By incorporating Weimar's diverse machine range, we greatly enhanced our product portfolio and offered customers a wider range of high-quality, innovative earthmoving solutions.

The acquisition also marked a pivotal moment in Hydrema's commitment to quality and versatility. By integrating Weimar's manufacturing expertise and technological prowess, we strengthened our ability to produce machines that met the highest standards of efficiency and durability. The merger was more than just product integration; it was a cultural and operational merger that created powerful synergies, combining Weimar's rich manufacturing history with Hydrema's innovative approach and customer-focused values.

The strategic acquisition of Weimar Werk Baumaschinen was a key factor in our growth and success in the European market, symbolising our ambition to lead the construction equipment industry with innovation, quality and a deep understanding of our customers' needs.

ENTRY INTO THE DEFENCE INDUSTRY (1980S AND 1990S)

Hydrema's entry into the defence sector in the 1980s and 1990s demonstrated our engineering versatility and commitment to innovation. Our significant involvement began with a major order from the UK Ministry of Defence in the late 1980s, an important milestone that not only expanded our business but also demonstrated our ability to meet the stringent demands of military applications. This venture was followed by the development of specialised demining vehicles in the 1990s, marking our serious investment in the defence sector.

These endeavours in the military industry were more than just new business avenues; they exemplified Hydrema's adaptability and dedication to engineering excellence. The creation of demining vehicles in particular reflected our innovative approach to solving complex challenges and reinforced our reputation for producing machines that excel in both performance and reliability. This period of military-industrial engagement contributed significantly to shaping Hydrema's identity as a company that challenges the boundaries of traditional earthmoving equipment and effectively meets diverse operational needs.
