The land where the HYDREMA 707G dump truck is at home

"To write this construction site report, I had to cross the Wadden Sea with my colleagues from Denmark where we did not arrive at a regular island, but on Hallig Langeness," explains German sales manager Martin Werthenbach from HYDREMA.

There, the municipality of Langeneß is planning to set up a local supply center on the Terp Treuberg to supply the inhabitants and holidaymakers with daily necessities, a medical station, permanent living space and the accommodation of a building yard. The Terp Treuberg is to become the future center of Hallig life.

Terp re-inforcement to guard against high tides
The Halligen are small, flat elevations situated along the Danish and German North Sea coasts line, which have no flood protection dikes. Instead, buildings are built on metre-high man-made mounds, so-called terps, to guard against high tides and storm surges. Approximately Twenty times a year all life, including the farm animals kept by the inhabitants, have to rescue themselves onto these terps, because high tide is flooding all land area and only the terps are kept dry above the tidal water.

The Hallig Langeneß is the largest Hallig off the Schleswig-Holstein North Sea coast. Due to the rise in sea water levels, the terps are not adequately protected from flooding in the long run. For this reason, the regional government of Schleswig Holstein in 2016 decided to implement a program to reinforce and develop the terps. The reinforcement of the Terp Treuberg is the first project within this framework on the Hallig Langeneß.
As a consequence of the reinforced flood protection measures, the terp will be redesigned and constructed as a large plateau several meters above the surrounding grass- and marshlands. The existing building was demolished and the new development will be built entirely on the newly created plateau. The reinforcement of the Terp Treuberg serves as a pilot project to demonstrate how life and living on the Hallig can be in the future.

The pathway up to the base of the terp reinforcement is muddy, but it is no trouble for the Hydrema 707G to climb the slope. 

Three little helpers
Three 707G HYDREMA dump trucks are used by the company carrying out the earthworks. A lot of sand is needed for the terp reinforcement, which is being delivered to Langeneß by ship and then driven to the terp construction site by the dump trucks. The core of the terp plateau consists of sand, which is then covered with a thick layer of heavy clay for optimal flood protection. Finally grass is seeded and over time, the terp will turn all green. 
The 707G dump truck proves to be the ideal machine for this job because its low weight as well as the overall width for the narrow streets. The distance between the ship landing spot and the construction site is about 3 km. Like ants, the three dump trucks drive back and forth between the jetty and the terp. Finally, when arriving at the terp, the trucks have to climb up the slope of the terp and into its base to unload the sand. The wet and extremely soft ground is impossible for standard wheeled vehicles to overcome.

The sand for the core of the terp construction is transported to Langeness by ship. The sand has to be moved fast, because the storage area at the landing spot is limited and the next ship is on its way.

The route between the pier and the terp, as well as the overall rough ground conditions on Langeneß was very decisive for the selection of the 707G. The huge comfort cab for the operator who sits in the dump truck all day, the automatically engaging differential lock, powerful all-wheel drive along with the engine’s automatic stop/start function, which works like in a car, are further crucial factors in the choice of the Hydrema 707G for this task. 
The automatic lowering of the body is a great advantage, because the movements are always flowing and the operator can concentrate fully on driving the machine, as the fully automatic body-return ensures that the body returns to its resting position after the tipping process.

Design that makes a difference
The sales manager explains about the machine design: “At the last BAUMA, Hydrema gave the answer to the critical design of site dumpers, in which the skip is positioned in front of the operator, and which have been banned from several construction sites due to numerous fatal accidents. While numerous manufacturers have retained the high seating position of the operator and thus the high center of gravity as well as trying to improve the visibility through the compromise of a rotating operator platform, our engineers have built a small dump truck that, like the larger dump trucks, is equipped with a full driver's seat and a comfortable cab. Numerous features such as the engine’s stop/start function and the automatic body return, but especially the low entrance and the low center of gravity of this extremely powerful machine (up to 122 hp) will not only convince the operators.

The 707 is a dumper that moves material safely, efficiently and quickly over longer distances. It is not a site dumper that is supposed to drive the material 5 meters further away on a compact road construction site, but shows its unmatched dominance precisely when greater distances have to be travelled on compact roads and in rough terrain. That is why this construction site on Langeneß is so exemplary for the 707“.
